Wish I Was Here trailer hits all the right polarizing notes

Zach Braff stirred the controversy pot when his Garden State follow-up film was funded by raising over $3 million on Kickstarter, and the first teaser trailer for Wish I Was Here has finally arrived. Whether you’re a backer of the project, a skeptic, or a curious film fan wanting to see what all the fuss is about, watching a new trailer for a mysterious movie is always interesting. It’s safe to say Braff’s new movie is a little more than the ensemble of clips that make up the trailer, and chances are the soundtrack will aim to measure up to its predecessor’s success.

Regardless, you can check out the intriguing first trailer for Wish I Was Here after the jump.

The trailer doesn’t tell us much about the story, the characters, or really anything, but it does showcase some appealing moments. If Garden State showed us anything it’s that Braff can craft some genuinely precious-yet-polarizing moments, and his newest film is sure to include quite a few.

Until we get to see those with a proper full-length trailer, here’s the Wish I Was Here plot the teaser trailer is missing:

“Wish I Was Here” is the story of Aidan Bloom (to be played by Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband who at 35, is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them. The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.

Wish I Was Here star Zach Braff, Josh Gad, Joey King, Ashley Greene, Donald Faison, Kate Hudson, and Mandy Patinkin. It’s scheduled to hit theaters July 25th, 2014.
