Let’s go back to camp with Wet Hot American Summer
I was really hoping Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp was going to be a big-screen sequel to the much-loved campy classic. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, but the colorful cast has returned to reprise their roles in an episodic series for Netflix, which is interesting. I, for one, am excited to at least be able to catch up…errr…rewind to the first day of camp when the sequel/prequel is made available for our viewing pleasure at the end of the month. The number of stars coming back and joining the cast to make us laugh is worth the watch alone.

While I’m bummed this isn’t an actual movie, I realize there’s a lot of opportunity in bringing the prequel to Netflix/streaming. For one, the 8-episode series (whether they’re 30-minute or 60-minute episodes) will give us more content and more of the wet hot world we love. Being able to binge watch the series in its entirety when it hits on July 31, 2015 will be like getting two or three movies, which is kind of wild. Secondly, it’s pretty great to have this kind of talent come back after all these years. Back when the first film was released in 2001, a lot of these faces were still growing into their respective spotlights.
I wish there was more plot synopsis to post, and this official blurb mostly focuses on logistics, but here it is:
Camp Firewood is more than just a summer camp. It’s a way of life. Join us July 31 for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, a limited 8-episode series coming to Netflix. [The series] tells the story of the first day of Camp Firewood’s famous summer season, now fourteen years after the film’s debut.
Those returning and familiar faces we can expect to see include Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Bradley Cooper, Janeane Garofalo, Joe Lo Truglio, Christopher Meloni, Marguerite Moreau, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, H. Jon Benjamin, Lake Bell, Chris Pine, Jon Hamm, Jason Schwartzman, and many more.
