Trailer for Prospect sets a desperate scene on a distant world
For every blockbuster trailer release like Avengers: Infinity War, a smaller, more intimate movie teaser sneaks through the cracks. Prospect is a full-length remake of the short film of the same name that debuted in 2014, and the first trailer for the movie paints a thrilling picture. The plot appears simple on the surface, and the movie looks quiet yet effective, which we don’t get enough of these days as far as sci-fi is concerned. That means the tension and success of the film relies on the performances of the actors and the overall aesthetics. Scavenger space miners get mixed up with shady characters? Simple yet effective. The trailer doesn’t give too much away, there are moments that’ll make you cringe a little even though you’re not sure what’s going on, and overall Prospect is giving off a very disturbing-but-intriguing vibe. Word is the short film was pretty great, so here’s hoping the full-length feature will do it justice.
Check out the first teaser trailer for Prospect:
Prospect premiered at SXSW last week, and reviews for the movie are already promising. It’s really cool to see short film directors (in this case Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl) bring their creations into the limelight with a feature film adaptation, especially when those feature-length adaptations are just as creative and engaging. I’m thinking about Shane Acker and his short/feature 9, but there are other examples. I’m looking forward to this one, but I’ll definitely have to watch the short film first (which I admittedly haven’t done yet).
Here’s the official plot of the Prospect (2018) movie:
A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They’ve secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon’s toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest’s other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father’s greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.
Compare that to the plot of the Prospect short film (2014):
Prospect is the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl on a toxic alien planet. She and her father hunt for precious materials, aiming to strike it rich. When the father is attacked by a roving bandit, the daughter must take control.
Prospect stars Sophie Thatcher, Pedro Pascal, Jay Duplass, Sheila Vand, and Andre Royo. Since the movie is only just debuting at SXSW, expect to see studio acquisition and a theatrical release date sometime in the future.
