The Predator first trailer sees Olivia Munn and Jacob Tremblay in trouble
Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3) is attempting to revive the ultimate hunter with his upcoming movie The Predator. Will he succeed in rejuvenating a franchise and bringing the predator back to his big screen glory? Only time will tell. Word is there were some reshoots (the entire third act) late in the game, so here’s hoping the movie’s director was able to put the pieces together. The first and second predator movies (headlined by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover) are action sci-fi classics, and Nimrod Antal’s Predators was a lot of fun, but the predator left a sour taste in the mouths of audiences in the two Alien vs. Predator movies. I’m optimistic, given Black’s track record, that The Predator will at least be competently made, a little funny, and enjoyable to watch while munching down your theater popcorn.
Check out the first trailer for The Predator below:
If you remember, Shane Black played the character of Hawkins in the 1987 original Predator movie, so it’s kind of cool to see him revisiting the world he helped bring to life. And this is another glimpse into a shared universe. The Predator takes place after the first two films but before Predators. There’s also a thread of continuity through related characters. Jake Busey is literally billed on the movie’s IMDb page as “The Son of Peter Keyes,” who was played by Gary Busey in Predator 2.
The trailer is somewhat lackluster and reminds me of the recent first teaser trailer for Venom in how underwhelmed I felt after watching. That said, the folks over at GamesRadar are convinced this trailer for The Predator is a huge misdirect. I’d like to think the movie is going to be more than a copy-and-paste, by-the-numbers monster romp. Fingers crossed The Predator will be a worthwhile surprise.
The official plot synopsis for The Predator is below:
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
The Predator stars Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Boyd Holbrook, Yvonne Strahovski, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Edward James Olmos, Sterling K. Brown, Lochlyn Munro, Trevante Rhodes, and Alfie Allen. The movie hits theaters later this year on September 14, 2018.
