The House with a Clock in its Walls trailer brings back the Amblin magic
If someone told you last year that Eli Roth (of Quentin Tarantino’s buddy/Bear Jew/Hostel and Cabin Fever director fame) would be the one to bring back the magic of Amblin/Universal Studios films from the 1990s, you wouldn’t have given them the time of day. But, here we are. Roth’s upcoming movie The House with a Clock in its Walls looks great, to come right out with it, and I’m more curiously intrigued. This is old school (coming from a ’90s kid) youth fish-out-of-water Spielberg fantasy at its finest if the trailer for the movie is any indication, and that’s just weird to say about an Eli Roth movie.
Watch the trailer for The House with a Clock in its Walls and judge for yourself:
I remember seeing this fun video clip of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett rocking out on set around the time Thor: Ragnarok was making waves, but in all honesty I wasn’t curious enough about the movie or paying enough attention to dig deeper at the time. Who’d have thought, right? I’m going to give Roth the benefit of the doubt here. While his previous movies have been competently assembled, they’ve left a sour taste in my mouth and I wouldn’t call myself a fan. That said, Roth has rubbed shoulders with some very talented people from whom he could learn a thing or two over the course of his career, so it’s only understandable that he’d hone his craft over time. I’m not calling him the next Ben Affleck, but I’m pleasantly surprised by what The House with a Clock in its Walls represents for Roth as a director and creative talent. Maybe it’s due to this one being adopted from fan-friendly source material (in this case a John Bellairs novel with the same name). Here’s hoping the movie delivers and opens up doors that lead to even more intriguing and exciting opportunities in the future.
