Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings in on spectacle
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer previews the sequel to the unnecessarily quick reboot of a character already brought to the big screen in a trilogy of successful Spidey blockbusters. Follow that? No? It’s OK. Remember those Tobey McGuire Spider-Man films? The first two were pretty good, right? Now, remember the skateboard-riding Spider-Man movie from 2012? No? It’s still OK. The important thing on the internet today is the brand new trailer for the sequel to that film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If the trailer is any indication, this movie is going to be big on spectacle and packed full of confusing characters for the non-comic book aficionado.
Re-introduce yourself to the quick-quipping web-slinger by watching the trailer after the jump.
So, here’s the score for those playing at home: Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper), Harry Osborn/Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti ever so briefly), and hints of The Vulture, Doctor Octopus, and the Sinister Six. Talk about a full roster. Plus, Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and his romantic interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) are still in the picture, so exposition explaining what’s happened since the last film and establishing everything new is expected. Add some big-budget spectacle to the mix and it’s hard to imagine audiences not getting confused with what’s on the screen.
Even the official synopsis setting up the film’s stakes gets a bit sticky:
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
Fortunately, movies have the ability to surprise and shatter expectations, so here’s hoping The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a whole lot of fun. Also, it’s been rumored that Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn and strings he pulls are only being used as setup for future films, so there’s most likely a long game at play here.
The movie hits theaters May 2, 2014, and below you’ll find the three newest posters (forming the header image’s tryptic poster) recently released.
