First Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers swing in and look promising
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel’s highly anticipated Spider-Man standalone film, finally swung in last night courtesy of Jimmy Kimell Live! The tone is less bombastic than previous Marvel ensembles, which is to be expected, but there’s a nice hint of coming of age and an unwritten Birdman joke in there somewhere. Personally, I’m not frothing at the mouth like some fans, but the movie looks like it could be the (third) rebirth of Spider-Man that finally sticks. Who knows what kind of witchcraft and deals with the devil went on behind closed doors for Marvel to finally get their hands on the property. Regardless of the behind-the-scenes canoodling, filmgoers are grateful.

Here’s the official trailer that dropped on Jimmy Kimmel last night:
And here’s the international trailer that, not surprisingly, is a little more fun and tonally more coherent:
“They” really know how to make an international trailer, don’t they? I don’t know why international trailers tend to be a little better, but there it is. Looks like fun, right? Who knew Tony Stark/Iron Man/Robery Downey Jr. was going to play so prominently into Spider-Man: Homecoming? I suppose since he did give Spidey the suit, he was bound to show up, but these trailers almost feature as much of him as they do the web slinger. Think they’ll go hand-in-hand into the final battle with Michael Keaton’s Vulture? I, for one, really, really want Downey Jr. to sarcastically drop a “What is he, some kind of…Birdman?” That’d be pretty great, and I’d consider the movie worth the ticket if any kind of Birdman reference were made. One can dream.
In case you’re not familiar with Spider-Man, his role as part of the Avengers, his relationship with Tony Stark, or any of the in-between, here’s the official plot synopsis for Spider-Man: Homecoming to wipe away the cobwebs:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May, under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark. Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car) and stars Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Logan Marshall-Green, Bokeem Woodbine, Martin Starr, Kenneth Choi, and Hannibal Buress. The movie hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
