The cast and director of SLC Punk are coming back for more
James Merendino, writer and director best known for his late 90’s tale of post-teen angst and chaos SLC Punk, plans to bring the original cast back for a follow-up. Merendino recently took to Twitter, setting a shoot start date for August.
Read some scarce details about the tentatively titled sequel Punk’s Dead: SLC Punk! 2 after the jump.
Merendino’s tweet doesn’t really promise anything, or share any specific details regarding plot or cast confirmation, but his Twitter account has a few @SLCPUNK2 tags scattered around.
Film School Rejects is getting some credit for revealing a bit more. They’re saying most of the original cast is on board and are citing the vague-yet-often-true “source close to the production” as having confirmed Matthew Lillard‘s return. Although no dotted lines have been signed, there’s plenty of assumption that Devon Sawa, Michael A. Goorjian, Til Schweiger, Chris McDonald and, Annabeth Gish will reprise their roles. Zombie Heroine Bob for the win!
Here’s what Merendino recently said about the sequel:
“I made SLC Punk when I was a kid, and accordingly, the story is naive, and, as just a coming of age story, not finished,” Merendino said. “The characters are facing big questions, 18 years later, as outsiders, Punk rockers… What relevance do they have in a world where all statements have already been made?”
The above image was pulled from a Facebook page for Punk’s Dead, which is showing a lot of love for the original film and the upcoming sequel. Sandwiched in between posts was a short article from Broadway World that shared some more thoughts from Merendino about the indie film process and the fan base that’s grown since the release of SLC Punk.
“Putting together Independent Movies is a never ending siege, but when it does come together, there is nothing more satisfying. In the years since I made SLC Punk, it has found a rather large and supportive following who have been very kind to me. So in making a sequel, I feel I owe it to those people to really do it right.”
Punk’s Dead: SLC Punk! 2, at least according to Merendino, is set to start shooting in August. That said, IMDb shows the movie’s release to be November 21, 2014, and Merendino’s tweet didn’t specify this year or next, so only time can narrow down the specifics. Midroad Movie Review will be following this one closely as news breaks, so stay tuned for more details!
