Talk about a great holiday gift for yourself or a movie/Peanuts fan. The book is pretty great, and you can take a peek inside and read a bit about what’s between the covers of The Art and Making of The Peanuts Movie after the jump.
I love seeing the attention to detail and experimental work that went into bringing these flat characters into 3D space. The book talks about the challenge artists faced when realizing these classic characters are only seen from certain angles, and to bring them to the big screen a full 360 view was needed. In fact, a large section of the book is dedicated to dissecting each character and showing us the detailed recreation of each for the new movie. It’s impressive, and it’s apparent the artists had a lot of fun giving the characters emotions and physical mannerisms.
Art books are usually pretty straightforward, with sections devoted to characters and scenes, and The Art and Making of The Peanuts Movie follows the format. Again, a large part of the book takes its time giving us good looks at each important character, and I think fans of the classic comic strip and follow-up animated features will really enjoy seeing their favorite little kids come to life in a whole new way. I grew up watching the holiday specials, but I remember them being pretty informational as opposed to trying to entertain. By comparison, The Peanuts Movie is more in line with the Ice Age movies (from the same director) and boasts plenty of impressive visuals to entertain the kids.
I’m a sucker for behind-the-scenes looks at intricately planned and executed movies, and The Peanuts Movie seems to have had tons of love and devotion poured into every step of the process. Just like seeing older hand-drawn animations being flipped back and forth to create movement, seeing the computer complexities and character evolutions is exciting as a fan of the craft. As you can see below, everything from color palette to camera lenses was considered.
Whether you’re a die-hard Charlie Brown fan, a lover of animation, or simply want a new art book for your coffee table, this one’s worth adding to the collection. Plus, I’ve got an extra copy that could be yours! If you like what you see, don’t hesitate to enter the giveaway.
