First Once Upon a Time in Hollywood trailer showcases Pitt and DiCaprio
To say Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is highly anticipated is a cliched understatement. Each new movie from Tarantino is preceded by a certain cult fanfare, and the juice is worth more of a mainstream audience squeeze with every new entry as the director ages. Tarantino has also said he only plans to direct 10 movies, backtracking a bit by explaining he may direct another in his geriatric years, so it’s significant this one is his ninth. Bottom line–Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was something special before its first trailer dropped.
Fortunately for all, the first trailer debuted the other day and told us very little about the plot while still establishing a specific tone and texture. What more can we ask for in a first-look trailer from an icon like Tarantino.
Watch the first trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood below:
The first trailer sets a very Tarantino tone by riding the fence between dark humor and absurdist violent comedy, especially given the movie was framed as a Tarantino Charles Manson movie.
Only time will tell how much we actually dive into a Manson quasi-biopic, as the trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood makes it seem like we’re focusing more on Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters. There are even theories already circling that the movie will go the Inglorious Basterds route and change history.
There may be some foundation to that theory. TMZ says Debra Tate, younger sister of Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie in the movie), revealed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood “is not what people would expect it to be when you combine the Tarantino and Manson names,” after the director explained his intentions with the movie’s plot.
Again, only time will tell what we’re getting, because right now there’s no official plot synopsis for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to share. We can enjoy Pitt and DiCaprio’s quippy comments and physical humor from the trailer, and that’s plenty for now.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Emile Hirsch, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis, Damon Herriman, Scoot McNairy, Samantha Robinson, Margaret Qualley, Lorenza Izzo, Clifton Collins Jr., Bruce Dern, and Lena Dunham. IMDb is also listing the following names without confirmed roles yet: Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Timothy Olyphant, James Marsden, James Remar, Zoë Bell, and Michael Madsen. Talk about a stacked cast! There’s also the very real chance we’ll get a surprise cameo or two (like in The Hateful Eight).
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has a current theatrical release date of July 26, 2019.
Two posters have dropped for the movie, but they’ve received a lot of criticism for their lack of creativity and bad Photoshopping.
