Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed an animated cyberpunk music video

Hayao Miyazaki is essentially the Walt Disney of Japanese animation. Studio Ghibli’s many animated films hold a special place in viewers hearts for a number of reasons. But did you know the director lent his talents to rock duo Chage & Aska for their music video “On Your Mark” way back in 1995?

There’s heart, there’s action, there’s beautiful animation. What more do you ask for in a Miyazaki production.

The music video follows two policemen who raid and massacre a religious cult and find an angelic being only to have her taken away and confined to a secure laboratory. Haunted by the fate of the “angel”, the two men formulate a plan and break into the laboratory.

According to the Wikipedia page for “On Your Mark,” the short film was created by Miyazaki when he was facing writer’s block while writing Princess Mononoke. Not a bad escape for an extremely talented director!
