Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals teases an intricate drama with first trailer
Nocturnal Animals created some buzz a month ago when the first teaser trailer dropped, and since then it coiled back into its quiet corner and waits to strike again in November. Admittedly, I hadn’t heard of the movie before the trailer did a drive-by, which grabbed my attention with the cast involved while it hinted at subtle, dangerous drama underneath. I feel like a film failure, but I’d also never heard of director Tom Ford and haven’t seen his first movie A Single Man, so I don’t know what to expect from Nocturnal Animals. If the cast, tone of the trailer, and early positive review buzz are any indication, the movie is one I won’t want to miss.
I’m playing a little catch-up, so if you’re like me and are intrigued by a dark drama that stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon, and a few more familiar faces, give the the first trailer for Nocturnal Animals a watch after the jump.
Nocturnal Animals is based on the book Tony and Susan published in 1993 by Austin Wright (buy the book), so the story has had a couple decades to gather a following. Tom Ford’s adaptation is bound to attract both fans of the source material as well as film-goers who bought a ticket for the director’s involvement or talent on the screen. Personally, I’m curious and could fully get behind a hard R-rated thriller with Gyllenhaal, Adams, and Shannon at their finest. Count me in when the movie hits theaters in November.
Here’s a plot synopsis for Nocturnal Animals (I can’t be sure how official it is):
A successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner’s idyllic life is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband. While he is away, she is shaken by the arrival of a manuscript written by her first husband, who she has not seen in years. The manuscript tells the story of a teacher who finds a trip with his family turning into a nightmare. As Susan reads the book, it forces her to examine her past and confront some dark truths.
Nocturnal Animals was directed by Tom Ford and stars Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Andrea Riseborough, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, Isla Fisher, Michael Sheen, and Karl Glusman. The movie makes its way to theaters on November 18, 2016.
