Meet Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker for the upcoming movie from the director of The Hangover
Everyone’s losing their minds over the first look glimpses of Joaquin Phoenix in full makeup as The Joker for Todd Phillips‘ upcoming standalone origin movie. Plot details for Joker (scheduled to be released in 2019) are being kept close to the chest, but we do know that Phoenix’s character is also named Arthur Fleck (pictured below courtesy of Phillips).
Fans of both Phoenix and The Joker seem excited to not only see the actor embody the iconic villain but also for a standalone movie that’s in no way connected to the current DC movie universe. Given Marvel’s dominance and success as far as summer tentpole blockbusters are concerned, and DC’s comparative failure (depending on who you ask), many moviegoers seem to think this route may open up new avenues through which DC can find its footing. If that means standalone films featuring A-list actors in compelling, human stories, I’m all for it. Only time will tell how Joker fares, both at the box office and in the hearts of fans.
