First short Mortdecai trailer sets a silly, snobby ’70s tone
A few months back some set shots of Johnny Depp wearing a curly mustache and a suit surfaced (which I didn’t bother posting) from the shooting of Mortdecai, and now the first short trailer for the film has finally arrived. It looks like a silly romp circling a rich eccentric and a stolen painting, and as a change of pace Depp appears to be wearing very little makeup and toning things down. Maybe it’s the accent, maybe it’s the high-society living. Regardless, he’s not without a prop to play with, and that mustache is sure to serve its purpose.
Watch the first trailer for the upcoming movie Mortdecai after the jump.
Mortdecai is based on a a trio of novels of the same name by author Kyril Bonfiglioli, and one could see the film adaptation (based solely on the trailer) as a bit of rougher-around-the-edges Wes Anderson-style odd moments.
For a bit of clarity, here’s a plot synopsis of the movie that makes it sound like something Bill Murray could have done during the ’90s:
Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
Mortdecai stars Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, Aubrey Plaza, Paul Bettany, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Munn, Jeff Goldblum, and Oliver Platt. It’s scheduled to hit theaters February 6, 2015.
