Cruise is essentially Bond in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation trailer
Tom Cruise made news last fall when he strapped himself to the outside of a plane during takeoff for Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, and the film again had the media abuzz when it was rumored production was in trouble over script issues, so it’s exciting to see a teaser and then the first full-length trailer fly in out of nowhere. Cruise is essentially American James Bond at this point, with a healthy franchise behind him, and Rogue Nation feels familiar to Bond’s latest foray in more than a few ways. That said, the trailer for the film balances its action with a sprinkling of Simon Pegg-infused humor and an almost lighthearted “we may all die” attitude, which has always been a fun staple of the M:I missions.

Again, it’s like Cruise is making his own Bond films now. He’s got the secret (government?) agency that’s being questioned, a new Bond/Hunt girl, an affinity for fast cars, a tech sidekick, and a shadowy new foe with a secret agency of their own. All the dots are there, but it’s been the franchise’s ability to have a good time while connecting them that’s helped it come this far. Here’s hoping Ethan Hunt has a few more missions under his belt before Cruise has to retire the role.
Just for the sake of being thorough, here’s the TV spot/teaser trailer that popped up yesterday:
And here’s an unofficial plot synopsis sharing some details (mostly seen in the trailer – provided by Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie) for Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation courtesy of SlashFilm:
The new flick finds Hunt’s highly effective but destructive Impossible Mission Force (IMF) disbanded by vengeful Washington bureaucrats such as the CIA chief. But Hunt pulls his team together to battle the shadowy force known as “The Syndicate” and its elusive leader.
The movie stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Simon McBurney, and Sean Harris. It was directed by Christopher McQuarrie (Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher) and hits theaters on July 31, 2015.
