First Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trailer
Tim Burton’s latest, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, got its first trailer last month to preview the director’s trademark property adaptation oddness. I know I’m not alone in my jaded view of Burton’s films, but as silly as it sounds it’s kind of nice to see him get back to the macabre. Alice in Wonderland is just…odd, and Big Eyes didn’t quite capture either the Burton or movie magic, but Miss Peregrine’s looks like it could be fun.
It’s hard not to compare the movie to mutants and X-Men, as so many other sites have done, so let’s get that out of the way. Here, Eva Green is a morbid-looking quirky Professor X, and her “home for peculiar children” is definitely a school for gifted youngsters. There’s one that floats/breathes excessively, one that’s invisible, one that eats out of the back of her head, a little one that’s super strong, one that plays with fire (on the poster), and plenty more to explore I’m sure. We only catch a quick glimpse of the big bad, in this case Samuel L. Jackson sporting frizzy white hair, but there’s a good chance we’ll see our little peculiars (can I coin the phrase Little Peculiars for these mini macabre superheroes?) go head-to-head with him to either protect their home or avenge Miss Peregrine. I haven’t read the original book, but I’m calling it now.

As mentioned, the movie is being adapted after the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children book that was published in 2013. Looks like author Ransom Riggs bridged the book out into a series and even a graphic novel, so if Burton’s movie does well we might get another one before long (as is the nature of YA novel-to-movie attempts these days). For some reason, the Miss Peregrine movie reminds me of a time not too long ago when YA adaptations took a few risks, and movies like The Spiderwick Chronicles, Aliens in the Attack, and Bridge to Terabithia were coming out left and right. Maybe it’s the over saturation of varying degrees of YA adventure that’s made these little gems less noticeable. Regardless, Miss Peregrine looks like it could be fun, even with Eva Green taking the place of Burton’s go-to Helena Bonham Carter, so I’ll give it a watch when it hits theaters.
