Netflix Brings The Witcher to Life with Henry Cavill
Netflix subscribers and fans of The Witcher franchise (the video games as well as books) are getting a little frothy in anticipation for the upcoming series starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The first teaser trailer set the stage back in July and teased a giant spider and Cavill with crazy eyes, and now a second trailer lays more groundwork for what’s to come.
Both trailers are worth the watch. Here’s the first:
Admittedly, I’ve only played the most popular of the video games, The Witcher 3: Wilde Hunt. That means my understanding of the lore and characters is limited. Netflix is providing a short synopsis right now which is enough to give future viewers a taste:
The witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.
The second trailer, which dropped on Halloween, is a little less teaser and a little more story intrigue and humor. Fans of the franchise are happy to see Geralt in the bath (an infamous scene from The Witcher 3) as well as more glimpses of familiar characters. Check it out.
Word is that the Netflix series takes inspiration more from the original Witcher books more than the video games. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich told EW back in July that she was most excited to bring the story in the books to new fans, and she’s keeping details about the first season somewhat secret:
We’re not adapting the video games, it’s a straight adaptation of the books. Which is great as the video games are also an adaptation of the books. They went one direction, we actually get to go another. We’re kind of holding close to our chest what we’re doing in the first season.
The Witcher is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 20, 2019.
