David Lowery’s The Green Knight gets its first trailer
The first trailer for director David Lowery’s take on the classic tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight dropped recently, and it’s worth the watch. Stylistically, it looks intriguing and stands out. As a result, the first trailer for The Green Knight is making waves and jumping to the front of film fans’ 2020 must-watch lists.
The movie looks to be a mix of sword-and-shield atmosphere and surreal high fantasy elements. I’m getting strong early Tarsem Singh vibes (The Cell, The Fall). Oh, and it’s also an A24 film!

Here’s an official plot synopsis for The Green Knight:
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
It’s probably been a while since you’ve read the Arthurian epic poem, but it’s a literary and educational staple alongside classics like Beowulf and The Odyssey. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight tells of the tale of a knight, a bargain, and an adventure to fulfill a oath. There’s a solid story to wrap a film around, and the trailer is promising.
Lowery gets a lot of praise for his most recent A Ghost Story, but he’s been around for a while. He worked with Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara before A Ghost Story and made a name for himself with Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. He followed up early success with Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, worked with Robert Redford again in The Old Man & the Gun, and as of right now it looks like he’s following up The Green Knight with a Peter Pan movie. His career is a good example of a director that follows the “one for me, one for them” notion of making a studio-pleaser and then a more personal project and then circling around again.
The Green Knight stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Sarita Choudhury, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, and Erin Kellyman. The movie is scheduled for theatrical released on May 29, 2020.
