Pacific Rim’s digital effects work will blow your mind
Big budget blockbusters today are packed to the brim with special effects and digital enhancements. Film wizardy has changed considerably since the early days of Méliès, and oftentimes it’s impossible to discern just what’s “real” and what isn’t. One of the more recent revelations regarding the intricate digital additions that come post-production was from The Great Gastby. Guillermo del Toro, along with Guillermo Navarro, Mathew Cullen, Javier Jimenez, co-founded the effects company Mirada, and last week they released an extremely impressive effects video showing how the opening sequence of Pacific Rim was created. The video is titled “Before and Afters,” and the watch will cost you about 3 1/2 minutes, but if you’ve got any interest in digital media you’ll enjoy every second of it.
