Exodus: Gods and Kings hops on the religious action film bandwagon
If the Darren Aronosfky-directed and Russell Crowe-starring “adaptation” of the biblical Noah tale had you up in arms or confused, get ready to grab those pitchforks and torches over the upcoming Ridley Scott-helmed Moses epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. Admittedly, I thought Noah was kind of enjoyable at times, but I’m a little wary of big-name directors and actors jumping back on the religiously-infused film bandwagon. We live in different times than the days that saw Charlton Heston take on the role of Moses for the big screen, and seeing Christian Bale riding into battle as a much younger-looking Moses feels a bit odd.
That said, as with any movie, it’s best to not pass judgement until you’ve seen the in-theater release, but the picture is made pretty clear regarding what kind of a film we’re going to get with Exodus: Gods and Kings. You can watch the first trailer and read a synopsis after the jump.
Again, watching that just felt…strange. Granted, The Bible is a pretty violence and sex-filled epic in its own right, but taking each of the stories and turning them into action-packed blockbusters might not be the smartest idea those driving the Hollywood ship have made. Word is, Ridley Scott is even eyeing the David and Goliath allegory, so the director doesn’t seem to be shying away from his newfound source material any time soon.
Not an avid bible-reader and looking to learn a little more about Scott’s upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings? Here’s a plot synopsis for the film:
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.
Exodus: Gods and Kings is set to hit theaters on December 12, 2014 and stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Aaron Paul, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro, Ben Mendelsohn, and Indira Varma.
