The new Elysium trailer features some sci-fi robot goodness
UPDATE: Now includes new film images
Elysium, Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi follow-up to District 9, finally has a trailer! The highly anticipated second outing from a director who’s already made a name for himself in genre film making, Elysium takes a look at class inequality in a futuristic world.
Blomkamp has a handful of big names at his disposal this time around, and if Matt Damon wearing an exoskeleton, gun-wielding robots, and what appears to be Sharlto Copley as a villain is up your alley then check out the brand new trailer after the jump!
It’s nice to see Blomkamp continue to create fully realized worlds within his films. That said, Elysium seems to play on some fairly familiar ground when it comes to the main plot. Class inequality separates two plains of existence. Protagonist crosses class boundaries. Sci-fi violence and character drama ensues. We can only hope the director of District 9 (which focused on similar ideas) has a few surprises in store for us.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Elysium stars Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, and Jose Pablo Cantillo. The film hits theaters August 9th!
