Dunkirk trailer sets the stage for Christopher Nolan’s new movie

Dunkirk is director Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated follow-up to Interstellar, and the first full-length trailer teases a much more grounded sort of epic. While the historical elements and true story retelling aren’t necessarily Nolan’s bag, he attempts to bring his gravitas to a much smaller stage by telling the story from the beach at Dunkirk. The trailer doesn’t give away much, but I was surprised to see Tom Hardy (although I shouldn’t have been given he’s worked with Nolan before; I just didn’t know he was in this one for some reason). Nolan has some heavy hitters under his belt already, but one always hopes a director’s newest film will be their best work yet. Here’s hoping Dunkirk doesn’t suffer from the true story anchor and instead gives the director some solid ground to build his movie around.

Watch the first full-length trailer for Dunkirk, read a very brief plot synopsis, and check out the first trailer for the film after the jump.

Personally, I don’t remember learning about the Battle of Dunkirk when I was in school, so I’m not familiar with what happened or the battle’s significance and why it would be one Nolan chose to adapt. That said, I won’t let my ignorance stop me from seeing the film or getting my hopes up for a strong war movie that frames its violence with an inspiring human element. Dunkirk is bound to attract attention due to Nolan’s involvement, so here’s hoping it’s a resounding success.

The director has kept his cards fairly close to the chest as far as weighty details go, but a brief plot synopsis was released setting that small stage I mentioned earlier. Here it is:

“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

Dunkirk stars Kenneth BranaghTom HardyCillian MurphyHarry StylesMark Rylance, and James D’Arcy. The movie hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
