First full-length Aladdin trailer isn’t as bad as you thought it would be
The first full-length trailer for Disney’s Aladdin dropped this week, and the internet reacted with a collective, “huh, it’s not that bad.” And it really isn’t. Disney’s upcoming live-action remake may not have Robin Williams’ charismatic performance, but (if the trailer is any indication) it’s not going to be the nightmare everyone expects it to be.
The trailer for Aladdin does a good job of reminding us this is a remake no one asked for (lookin’ at you Jafar) while keeping nostalgia alive with a couple nods to original songs that actually sound pretty good.
Judge for yourself, and check out the first full-length trailer for Aladdin:
It’s sad that the first reaction to the trailer had to be a sigh of relief, but that first Entertainment Weekly cover featuring Will Smith’s Genie really put a sour taste in people’s mouths. The teaser trailer that debuted soon after, with the first look of Smith in blue, didn’t do much to help. That said, the general consensus surrounding the full-length trailer seems like those same people are pleasantly surprised.
I keep forgetting this Disney remake/reimagining treatment is directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Robin Hood), and every time I remember it gives me that same “huh” reaction. Ritchie’s recent movies haven’t quite kept that edge that defined his style earlier in his career, and if you didn’t see his name in the credits you probably couldn’t guess he was responsible for 2019’s Robin Hood or King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Point is, what Ritchie might have brought to an Aladdin movie ten or fifteen years ago may not be what he’s offering today. Here’s hoping Aladdin continues to pleasantly surprise.
Shame on you if you don’t know the plot of this movie. Jokes aside, here’s a barebones plot synopsis for Aladdin that’s not going to help if you don’t already know what you’re in for:
