A Cure for Wellness trailer sees Gore Verbinski return to horror
A Cure for Wellness is director Gore Verbinski’s upcoming horror/thriller starring Dane DeHaan, and the first trailer for the film establishes an appropriately creepy vibe. Verbinski is probably known most for his contributions to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but he’s also dabbled in horror before with The Ring. Here, the director is diving down the rabbit hole of mental instability and strange, secluded get well soon facilities in Switzerland, and I’m digging the trailer and tone set. Plus, DeHaan seems perfect for his kind of movie, so it should be worth the watch to see him descend into madness at the hands of a less-than-honest mental hospital doctor played by Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The Patriot).
Watch the first trailer, read a plot synopsis, and check out the poster for A Cure for Wellness after the jump.
A bit unsettling, right? There’s obviously something devious going on here, and it’s hard not to jump to the “it’s LSD!” conclusion. I’m reminded of the Ben Kingsley/Kate Beckinsale/Michael Caine movie Stonehearst Asylum and it’s setting, but here’s hoping A Cure for Wellness is more believable and well-written than that mess of a movie. This one looks great aesthetically, with some beautiful cinematography on display, so I’m on board. Plus, Verbinski is pretty solid as a director (I’ll forever love him for Rango), and it’s nice to see him getting a little weird.
If the trailer didn’t reveal enough of the story, here’s a plot synopsis for A Cure for Wellness:
An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.
A Cure for Wellness is directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth, and Jason Isaacs. The movie makes its way to theaters on February 17, 2017.
