The Hunt trailers remind us the movie was controversial
For a movie that’s touting a “the most talked about movie of the year no one has seen” tagline, the new trailer for The Hunt isn’t as outrageous as you’d expect. In fact, on the surface, The Hunt looks like an adaptation of The Most Dangerous Game with not-so-subtle jabs at rich white people. Blumhouse’s Woke Dangerous Game, if you will.
What’s more, this kind of hunt the unfortunate plot point isn’t a new one. The Most Dangerous Game is a classic, so it’s been tackled and adapted more than a few times. On top of straight adaptations, immediate lookalikes like Battle Royale, The Hunger Games, The Condemned and even Gamer or The Belko Experiment have played with the notion.
The Hunt looks to rely heavily on its satirical angle. Decide for yourself. Here’s the first trailer for The Hunt:
The trailer above was released way back in June 2019. There’s so much happening these days that it’s easy to forget the waves The Hunt made when it was originally set to be released in September 2019. Elite liberals hunting conservative “deplorables” was the main cause of the hubbub, and it was enough to rustle even the president’s jimmies.
But the controversy has passed and the waves have died down. So, there’s been plenty of time for people to talk if they were going to continue talking. Blumhouse is taking the advertising road some horror films take with their “scariest movie ever made” campaigns. We’ll see if it works for The Hunt.
A second trailer dropped a week ago to further sell the pitch:
Not sold yet? Here’s an official plot synopsis for The Hunt:
Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.
In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal, knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman at the center of it all.
The Hunt stars Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Emma Roberts, Ethan Suplee, J.C. MacKenzie, Glenn Howerton, Ike Barinholtz, Macon Blair, Hannah Alline, Teri Wyble, and Amy Madigan. The movie is now scheduled for release on March 13, 2020.
