Black Widow trailer teases Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited standalone movie
The first trailer for Marvel’s Black Widow dropped in the early hours of the morning (3 a.m. EST), and it’s fueling conversation around the online movie water cooler today. Black Widow is the first movie slated for Marvel’s Phase Four. It’s also a movie fans of the character have wanted since Scarlett Johansson first brought her to the screen in Iron Man 2.
There’s not a lot more you need to know. Waiting for a Black Widow movie? Well, here’s the trailer:
There’s a lot to like about the first Black Widow teaser trailer, from the music to the action to the humor nods. It’s easy to make comparisons in tone to Captain America: The Winter Soldier after first viewing. That said, a few moments of stereotypical dialogue keep expectations grounded.
No official Black Widow plot synopsis has been released yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from guessing. Word around the web speculates that Scar-Jo and crew will be up against a character called Taskmaster (spotted briefly in the trailer; someone who can mimic fighting styles after seeing an opponent fight) and are returning to the Red Room.
EW shared Taskmaster concept art back in July, so it appears speculation is fairly safe. The Red Room, where assassin’s like Black Widow/Natasha Romonaff are trained, was first seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It only makes sense to go back and settle the score after the events of Civil War, which is when Black Widow takes place.
In speaking with EW at San Diego Comic Con this year, Scarlett Johansson revealed where the character of Black Widow is mentally and emotionally during the movie:
“Where we find Natasha in her life at this point is very specific…She really is in a dark place where she’s got no one to call and nowhere to go. She’s really grappling with her own self. When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next — that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”
It’s hard not to smile when David Harbour’s Red Guardian makes his appearance in the trailer. Harbour gets a lot of love from the Stranger Things crowd, even after the critically panned Hell Boy reboot earlier this year, and it’s good to see him having fun.
Red Guardian was apparently the Soviet’s response to Captain America, and Harbour has called the character a super soldier with a lot of idiosyncrasies. Also joining the cast of characters is Black Widow’s sister, Yelena, played by Midsommer’s Florence Pugh and a repeat Red Room assassin named Malena played by Rachel Weisz.
Weisz let slip just a snippet of mystery about the movie’s McGuffin during the EW Comic Con interview:
“She’s also deeply involved in a scientific experiment which I cannot tell you about because it’s part of the story we can’t talk about!”
Black Widow is sure to get hyped with more trailers and posters before release next spring, but for now the first teaser trailer is enough to get people excited. What do you think?
Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and O-T Fagbenle. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2020.
