Charlize Theron means business in first Atomic Blonde trailers
If every actor or actress gets a Taken/John Wick, the upcoming beat-em-up Atomic Blonde is Charlize Theron’s. The first trailers for Atomic Blonde paint the movie in neon and dangerous with Theron kicking ass and taking names as an international spy on a mission. She’s “equal parts spycraft, sensuality, and savagery,” and there’s not much more you need to know before digging into the trailers and deciding whether Atomic Blonde is up your alley. Comparisons to John Wick (given the fight choreography on display and the fact that the director directed some of Wick) are bound to abound, which is alright if you were among those who thought John Wick was a blast. I’m feeling a little Guy Ritchie, hints of Edgar Wright/Matthew Vaughn, and that jump-out-the-window scene is peeled straight out of Robert Rodriguez’s first Machete movie. Sounds like fun, right?
Watch Charlize Theron get beat up and do some beating up in the trailers for Atomic Blonde after the jump.
Here’s the green band trailer:
And here’s a steamier red band trailer:
Atomic Blonde’s director David Leitch not only had a hand in John Wick, but he’s also slated to direct Deadpool 2. Atomic Blonde looks like it could be what some call a guilty pleasure movie–gratuitous action and sex–but there’s enough style on display in the trailers to hope for an exceptional movie not unlike Vaughn’s Kingsman or Ritchie’s Snatch. Leitch seems to have found his style/niche/interest and enjoys this kind of action romp, so here’s wishing him success.
In case the trailers weren’t enough to sell you on the movie, here’s a plot synopsis for Atomic Blonde to fill in some details:
The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Bill Skarsgård, Eddie Marsan, and James Faulkner. The movie makes its way to theaters on July 28, 2017.
