First trailer for Dennis Villeneuve alien movie Arrival
The first full-length trailer for the Dennis Villeneuve-directed alien invasion movie Arrival swept through the internet recently, and it teases a less blow-em-up type of extraterrestrial encounter. Just like vampires and werewolves, alien blockbusters tend to come around in cycles, and every time mainstream audiences jump on the bandwagon a few “smaller” extraterrestrial contenders sneak through the cracks. Arrival looks like it’ll be one of those, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Average Joe blockbuster popcorn-munchers walk out disappointed having expected a more generic movie. Here’s hoping Villeneuve (the director of Prisoners and Sicario) can mix his gravitas and tension with sci-fi for an out of this world movie experience.
I’m not 100% sold yet, but the movie definitely has me curious. Watch the first full-length trailer for Arrival, read a plot synopsis, and check out the poster for the movie after the jump.
Arrival is adapted from the short story “Story of My Life” from Ted Chiang’s collection Stories of Your Life and Others, so if you’ve read that you’ve got the basic plot points. For those who haven’t read the story, the trailer does a decent job of introducing us to the dilemma and the main players who’ll be interacting with the alien visitors. There’s more to it, of course, and Arrival looks like it’ll deal as much with human drama as it will the extraterrestrial elephant in the sky. Again, I’m not jumping to see this in theaters, but it’ll surely get some kind of early praise simply for who’s involved and what’s on display so far.
In case the trailer didn’t tease enough, here’s an official plot synopsis for Arrival:
When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma. The movie hits theaters on November 11, 2016.
