New Black Mass trailer sets a different tone for Whitey Bulger biopic
The first trailer for Johnny Depp‘s upcoming Whitey Bulger bipoic Black Mass set an ominous tone, and the brand new trailer for the film follows up with something a little more upbeat but just as dangerous. Black Mass looks like a solid crime drama with a strong cast filling in the cracks around Depp’s Bulger ( including Joel Edgerton, Corey Stoll, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Juno Temple, Peter Sarsgaard), and it can’t be said enough how great it is to see the actor wearing his serious shoes once again. They’ve been tucked away somewhere to make room for costumes and outrageous faces, that’s for sure.
With serial roles like Captain Jack Sparrow, his return as the Mad Hatter in Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), and an always-open role in any Tim Burton project, Depp has been wearing a little thin on more than a few film fan palates. It feels safe to say he needs roles like this, surrounded by heavy hitters like these, to convince once-sold moviegoers that he’s more than a live-action cartoon character. After this, he’s got two sequels on his plate (both from Disney) and nothing else scheduled yet, so only time will tell. Fortunately, Black Mass looks fantastic. If the trailers are any indication, we’re in for a tense mix of modern noir and solid character moments.
Watch the second full-length trailer for Black Mass after the jump. The movie will be the third from director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), and you should be able to catch it in theaters on September 18, 2015.
