Fantastic Four trailer previews a dark, dramatic re-imagining
Marvel and Co. have kept their lips pretty sealed regarding the Fantastic Four reboot that’s hitting theaters later this summer, which is why the cinemascape is going a little crazy this morning now that the first trailer for the film has flown in out of nowhere. It’s not often you wake up to every movie news outlet posting a big trailer in the early morning hours. That said, the trailer for Fantastic Four previews what looks like a surprisingly dark and dramatic re-imagining of the long-assembled comic book team, and it’s nice to finally see what to expect from a younger group of actors portraying them on screen. Looks great. Sign me up.

That definitely wasn’t the tone I was expecting, which makes it all that more intriguing. Granted, from director Josh Trank (Chronicle), I suppose a darker tone shouldn’t have been unexpected. Honestly, Fantastic Four wasn’t really on my radar for the year. I was aboard the skeptical bandwagon since the movie was announced, anticipating a campy feel and an unnecessary retelling, but now the film’s future looks a little brighter. Call me curious, to say the least.
If you’re not familiar with the characters at all, here’s a pretty vague plot synopsis for Fantastic Four to give you the barebones basics of the reboot:
FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
Those daunting powers aren’t really detailed, but it’s a safe bet to guess that fire, invisibility, stretching, and stone skin are still part of the proceedings.
Fantastic Four stars Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell as the key players, and they’re backed up by a supporting cast that includes Tim Blake Nelson, Reg E. Cathey, and Toby Kebbell. Look for the film to hit theaters on August 7, 2015.
