Alex Garland tackles artificial intelligence with Ex Machina

Writer Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later) is stepping behind the camera for his directorial debut Ex Machina, and the first trailers for the film promise a twisted tale of artificial intelligence. Having just watched Automata, I couldn’t help but compare the two films at first glance. That said, Garland’s movie seems a bit more atmospheric, and the trailers set up an interesting dynamic between the leads (Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson) and the robot they’re working with.

Watch two new trailers for Ex Machina and read the plot synopsis for the film after the jump.

Here’s the teaser:

And here’s a longer international trailer:

A lot of people are thinking that Gleeson’s character is also a robot being Turing tested, so here’s hoping that’s not the twist the film is banking on as a surprise. Fingers crossed that’s not the case.

Here’s a plot synopsis for Ex Machina to fill in some of the details:

Caleb Smith, a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman. Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava, a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, seductive––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Ex Machina stars Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Corey Johnson. The film will hit theaters April 10, 2015.
